Gato Zinzli / Sesame balls

Traditional sesame balls commonly known as gato zinzli in Mauritius, they are an all-time favourite of most!

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup full-cream milk powder
  • 2 tbsp soft butter (at room temperature)
  • 6 tbsp sugar
  • Around 50g sesame seeds(zinzli) to roll the balls in
  • Water, around 1/2 cup
  • Oil to deep fry

Preparation:

  1. Mix together flour, sugar, milk powder and butter.
  2. Add the water gradually to form a dough. It should be quite soft and sticky but malleable by hand
  3. Form little balls, around 30 and roll in sesame seeds.
  4. Fry in hot oil on a medium-low stove and turning the balls around for even browning.
  5. Remove from oil and drain on absorbent paper and sesame balls are ready to be served!
